Holding Pattern

A holding pattern is a predetermined flight path followed by an aircraft while it waits for clearance to land at its destination airport. Holding patterns are typically used when air traffic control (ATC) needs to delay an aircraft's landing due to congestion, weather, or other factors. The holding pattern is usually a racetrack-shaped path that the aircraft flies at a specific altitude and airspeed until it is cleared to land. Pilots must follow specific instructions from ATC while in a holding pattern, including the direction of turns and the length of time to remain in the pattern. Holding patterns can be stressful for pilots, as they require precise navigation and fuel management to ensure the aircraft can remain in the air until clearance to land is given.
