Performance-Based Navigation (PBN)

Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) is a method of air navigation that allows aircraft to fly precisely-defined paths using advanced on-board navigation systems and avionics. PBN enables aircraft to navigate using global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and other performance-based technologies, which can improve safety, reduce flight time, and save fuel. PBN includes Area navigation (RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures, which allow aircraft to fly on any desired flight path within the coverage of ground- or space-based navigation aids or within the limits of the avionics on board the aircraft. PBN procedures are designed to be flexible and scalable, and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of different airspace users and operational environments.
