Shock Wave
In aviation, a shock wave is a type of pressure wave that forms when an aircraft travels at or above the speed of sound. As the aircraft approaches the speed of sound, the air in front of it compresses and forms a shock wave. This shock wave creates a sudden increase in air pressure and temperature, which can cause structural damage to the aircraft and produce a loud noise known as a sonic boom. Pilots must be trained to handle the effects of shock waves, and aircraft must be designed to withstand the stresses they produce.
