Static Electricity Buildup
Static electricity buildup is the accumulation of electric charges on the surface of an object, caused by the contact and separation of two surfaces. In aviation, static electricity buildup can occur on aircraft surfaces during flight due to friction with air molecules. This buildup can cause a spark discharge, which can be hazardous in the presence of flammable gases or liquids. To prevent this, aircraft are equipped with static wicks, which are thin metal strips attached to the trailing edges of wings, tail, and other surfaces. These wicks provide a low-resistance path for the static charge to dissipate into the air, reducing the risk of a spark discharge.
