Terrain Avoidance and Warning System

Terrain Avoidance System (TAS) is an on-board system that uses radar altimeter and GPS data to provide pilots with terrain and obstacle information. The system alerts pilots of potential terrain conflicts and provides visual and audio warnings to avoid terrain collisions. TAS is a critical safety feature in aviation, especially during takeoff and landing, when the aircraft is at a low altitude and close to the ground. The system is designed to prevent Controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accidents, which occur when an airworthy aircraft, under pilot control, is flown into terrain, water, or obstacles with no apparent awareness on the part of the crew.
