Transponder

A transponder is an electronic device that receives a radio signal from ground-based radar and automatically transmits a reply signal that includes encoded data, such as the aircraft's altitude and identification code. Transponders are used to enhance air traffic control radar systems and to provide pilots with traffic information. They are also used in collision avoidance systems, such as TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision avoidance System), which alerts pilots of nearby aircraft that may pose a threat of collision. In addition, transponders are used for security purposes, such as identifying military aircraft or tracking stolen aircraft.
