Wake Turbulence
Wake turbulence is a disturbance in the atmosphere that forms behind an aircraft as it passes through the air. It is created by the vortices that are shed from the wingtips of the aircraft as it generates lift. These vortices can be hazardous to other aircraft that are flying behind the generating aircraft, especially during takeoff and landing. The severity of the wake turbulence depends on the size and weight of the generating aircraft, as well as its speed and configuration. Pilots are trained to avoid flying too closely behind other aircraft to prevent encountering wake turbulence.
