Eustachian Tube

The Eustachian tube is a narrow tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and upper throat. It is responsible for equalizing the air pressure in the middle ear with the air pressure outside the body. During takeoff and landing, the air pressure in the cabin changes rapidly, which can cause discomfort or pain in the ears. To alleviate this, passengers are often advised to swallow, yawn, or chew gum to help open the Eustachian tube and equalize the pressure. Failure to equalize the pressure can result in temporary hearing loss, dizziness, or even a ruptured eardrum.
