Inertial Navigation Systems (INS)
Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) are a navigation aid that uses a computer, motion sensors (accelerometers) and rotation sensors (gyroscopes) to continuously calculate via dead reckoning the position, orientation, and velocity (direction and speed of movement) of a moving object without the need for external references. INS is widely used in aviation as it provides accurate and reliable navigation information, especially in situations where other navigation aids such as GPS are unavailable or unreliable. INS can also be used in conjunction with other navigation systems to provide redundancy and improve accuracy.
