Mode C

Mode C is an aviation term that refers to a type of aircraft transponder that provides air traffic controllers with the aircraft's altitude information. The altitude information is obtained from the aircraft's encoding altimeter and is transmitted to the ground-based radar system. This allows air traffic controllers to have a more accurate picture of the airspace and to separate aircraft vertically. Mode C is required in certain airspace, such as Class B and Class C airspace, and above 10,000 feet mean sea level in the United States. Failure to operate in Mode C airspace when required can result in a violation of FAA regulations.
