Encoding Altimeter

An encoding altimeter is an instrument that measures the altitude of an aircraft above a fixed level. It uses an aneroid barometer to measure the static pressure of the atmosphere and a separate chamber that is vented to the atmosphere through a calibrated leak to measure the total pressure. The difference between the two pressures is called the pressure altitude, which is then converted to the corresponding altitude above mean sea level (MSL) using an encoding function. The encoding function is a mathematical formula that takes into account the local barometric pressure and temperature to provide an accurate altitude reading. Encoding altimeters are used in conjunction with transponders to provide altitude information to air traffic control.
