Slats
In aviation, slats are aerodynamic surfaces on the leading edge of the wings of fixed-wing aircraft which, when deployed, allow the wing to operate at a higher angle of attack. This increases the lift coefficient of the wing, providing an increase in lift without an increase in airspeed. Slats are usually deployed during takeoff and landing, when the aircraft's speed is relatively low and the angle of attack needs to be increased to generate enough lift to keep the aircraft airborne. There are two main types of slats: fixed and movable. Fixed slats are permanently attached to the wing, while movable slats can be extended and retracted as needed.
