Speed Of Sound

Speed of Sound is the distance travelled by a sound wave per unit time. In aviation, it is an important concept as it affects the performance of aircraft. The speed of sound varies with temperature, altitude, and humidity. At sea level, the speed of sound is approximately 761 miles per hour (661 knots). When an aircraft approaches the speed of sound, it encounters a shock wave known as a sonic boom. This can cause structural damage to the aircraft and is also a source of noise pollution. Therefore, aircraft are designed to operate below the speed of sound, and supersonic flight is restricted to certain areas.
