High-energy Particles

High-energy particles refer to subatomic particles that have a kinetic energy greater than a few million electron volts (MeV). In aviation, high-energy particles can pose a threat to aircraft and their occupants, particularly at high altitudes where the Earth's atmosphere provides less protection from cosmic radiation. Pilots, flight crews, and frequent flyers are at an increased risk of exposure to high-energy particles. Exposure to high-energy particles can lead to acute radiation sickness, an increased risk of cancer, and other health effects. To mitigate this risk, aviation authorities have established guidelines and regulations for radiation exposure limits for aircrew and passengers.
