Indicated Airspeed

Indicated Airspeed (IAS) is the airspeed read directly from the airspeed indicator, which is the speed of an aircraft relative to the surrounding air mass as measured by the pitot-static system. It is the speed used by pilots to fly the airplane, and is not corrected for any instrument or position errors. IAS is used to determine important factors such as takeoff and landing speeds, stall speeds, and maneuvering speeds. It is also used to calculate fuel consumption, estimated time of arrival, and range of the aircraft. IAS is affected by altitude, temperature, and atmospheric pressure, and must be corrected to determine the true airspeed (TAS) and groundspeed (GS) of the aircraft.
