Very High Frequency
In the context of aviation, Very High Frequency (VHF) refers to the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves from 30 to 300 MHz, with corresponding wavelengths of ten meters to one meter. VHF is commonly used for a variety of purposes in aviation. Aircraft are usually equipped with VHF radios to enable communication with air traffic control, and these radios operate within a specific subset of the VHF spectrum, typically between 118.0 and 136.975 MHz. VHF is also used for navigational aids such as VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) stations, which transmit two signals on a VHF frequency. The phase difference between these signals can be used by an aircraft's navigation system to determine its bearing from the station. VHF signals are generally limited to line-of-sight propagation, which means they do not travel well over the horizon or around obstacles. This makes them well-suited to aviation, where the aircraft's altitude often provides a clear line of sight to the transmitter.
