Runway Overrun Prevention

Runway Overrun Prevention refers to the measures taken to prevent an aircraft from overshooting the end of the runway during takeoff or landing. These measures include the use of engineered materials arresting systems (EMAS), runway end safety areas (RESA), and the implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for pilots. EMAS is a bed of crushable material that is placed at the end of the runway to slow down an aircraft in case it overshoots the runway. RESA is a designated area beyond the end of the runway that provides a buffer zone for an aircraft to decelerate safely in case of an overrun. SOPs for pilots include calculating the required landing distance, using maximum available braking, and executing a go-around if necessary.
