Upper Information Regions
Upper Information Regions (UIRs) are designated airspace areas above the transition altitude where air traffic control provides information service only. In UIRs, pilots are responsible for their own navigation and separation from other aircraft. UIRs are established to facilitate the flow of traffic between adjacent Flight Information Regions (FIRs) and to reduce the workload of air traffic controllers. The boundaries of UIRs are usually defined by geographical coordinates or radio navigation aids. Pilots are required to report their position and altitude to air traffic control at regular intervals while flying in UIRs.
