Class A Airspace
Class A airspace is the airspace overlying the United States and extending from 18,000 feet above mean sea level (MSL) up to and including flight level (FL) 600 (60,000 feet MSL). It is designated to accommodate IFR (instrument flight rules) operations only. All aircraft operating in Class A airspace must be equipped with a Mode C transponder and must be under positive air traffic control. Additionally, pilots must possess an instrument rating and clearance from air traffic control to enter Class A airspace. Class A airspace is typically found over the busiest airports and air traffic control centers in the country.
