Exterior Lighting
In the context of aviation, exterior lighting refers to the system of lights installed on the outside of an aircraft. These lights serve multiple purposes, primarily related to safety and visibility. They include navigation lights, anti-collision lights, landing lights, taxi lights, and logo lights. Navigation lights are used to indicate the aircraft's direction and position during night or in poor visibility conditions. They are typically red, green, and white. Anti-collision lights, usually red or white strobe lights, are used to make the aircraft visible from a distance, reducing the risk of mid-air collisions. Landing lights are high-intensity lights used during takeoff and landing to illuminate the runway. Taxi lights, similar to landing lights but less intense, are used when the aircraft is moving on the ground. Logo lights illuminate the airline's logo on the tail for identification purposes. All these lights are controlled by the pilot from the cockpit and are subject to specific regulations set by aviation authorities like the Federal aviation administration (FAA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
